Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine Review

At the Concept2 Model D review, we mentioned that it was the best air rowing machine available. While we can’t quite deviate much from it, it is also true that the Model D isn’t exactly the most affordable rowing machine. For those seeking an affordable rowing machine that’s almost as good as the Model D though – and costs a fraction of the price – we have for you the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine. As you would expect from a cheap air resistance rowing machine, Stamina does have to cut some corners, but they aren’t many, and while the Model D does an exceptional job, Stamina’s machine (as will be seen below) doesn’t perform badly either.

Ease of Assembly

The  Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine is quite easy to assemble, with the two allen wrenches and the one normal wrench required for the job having been included with the pack. The user guide is decent enough, and users commented that they were able to put together the machine in around 45 minutes working alone, or 15 minutes when working with another person.

Since this is perhaps the cheapest air resistance rowing machine available from a reputed company, one  is justified in having doubts about the build quality. It is true that the  Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine does not have the aluminum frame of a Concept2 Rowing Machine, but the steel frame provided is as sturdy as the former. Though not meant for commercial use, users have commented that they could use the machine for long hours everyday for years at a stretch, without encountering any problems. The three year warranty on the frame is better than those provided by many of Stamina’s competitors in this price bracket.

The cord which connects the handle to the flywheel is equally sturdy, and there is therefore no risk of if snapping or going slack. Other parts, such as the flywheel, are equally well made, and users had little to complain about them.

Ease of Use

Like all air resistance machines, the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine comes with no fixed resistance. This is because the harder you row, the greater the draft generated in the flywheel, and hence the resistance. This type of resistance is preferred because it, along with water resistance, simulates real rowing to the greatest extent, and hence, provides the maximum health benefits.

The resistance mechanism on this rowing machine is quite smooth, with the cord and the flywheel moving without either hindrance or slack. However, the machine does not come with damper settings found on the much costlier Concept2 machines. The seat glides smoothly on the monorail, and does not make any noises (other than the sound made by the flywheel which is common to all air resistance rowing machines) during workout.

The seat is well padded, ensuring that long workouts on the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine are not uncomfortable. The handle is padded and textured, making for a comfortable grip. The footrests cater to all major foot sizes, and the nylon straps lock the feet in well. Some users commented that you can even use the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine barefoot, because the texture of the footrests is quite comfortable.

The Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine has a simple control panel, which records distance traveled, speed, strokes count and calories burnt. The speed is shown constantly, with there being an option for either showing any one of the other attributes, or rotating them using the Scan option. The device is powered by two AA sized batteries.

Ease of Storage

Like other air resistance rowing machines, the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine can be stored away by removing a bolt on the device, raising the monorail into a vertical position, and putting the bolt back in place. This reduces the footprint of the machine significantly, allowing it to be stored without difficulty. It can be turned on manually, or by moving the seat, and it turns off after four minutes of inactivity.

What is the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine best for?

According to the company, the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine has a maximum capacity of 250 pounds, which is decent considering the price range of the machine. It does have a slightly shorter monorail as compared to the higher end Concept2 devices, but users as tall as 6’4” state that they could use the device without any issues. On the lower side, users as short as 5’2” could use the machine with ease.

Though priced surprisingly low compared to the Concept2 rowing machines, the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine lives up to the reputation of the company, providing users with a solid frame, smooth functionality and a decent control panel. Those used to making use of the more sophisticated options (eg. Damper settings or advanced control panel features) may feel a bit let down, though considering the price range, one really cannot expect Stamina to deliver more. Thus, in conclusion, while those seeking a sophisticated and comprehensive rowing machine may head for higher priced models, the Stamina Air Rower Rowing Machine is perfect for anyone who wants to experience all the benefits of an air resistance rowing machine for a fraction of the price of the average rowing machine in the category.
